AMD Steals Lead On Dual-Core Server

Chipmaker, AMD, the intense rival to Intel has started selling a dual-core server chip. In doing so they have stolen a march on its larger opponent.

All the major server vendors except Dell are customers for the new chip. These include HP, Sun Microsystems and IBM.

The lead AMD has is such that Intel only vendors such as Dell, will not have a dual-core x86 server processor until 2006.

Pricing for the new chip is expected to be aggressive. AMD will sell the slowest of the new chips at the same price as the fastest of the single core. A potential increase of speed of 20-30% for the same price.
